Optical numbers are close
VIVIDSTORM lists 0.6 gain and 170° viewing. AWOL Vision’s Cinematic ALR page likewise lists 0.6 peak gain and a 170° viewing angle, plus a claimed 95% overhead-light rejection figure. Similar headline numbers do not mean identical material behavior, but they show that both products are positioned around wide-viewing, lower-gain UST ALR rather than narrow-cone high-gain Fresnel designs.
The major difference is permanence
AWOL’s fixed frame is mechanically simple and visually permanent. VIVIDSTORM adds a motor, roller and tab-tension system so the image surface can disappear. That flexibility matters in shared living spaces, but fixed frames remain attractive when the wall is dedicated to cinema and simplicity is the priority.
Size coverage points in different directions
The current AWOL Cinematic page emphasizes 120, 132 and 150-inch models. VIVIDSTORM PRO covers 84 through 120 inches. Smaller rooms therefore lean toward VIVIDSTORM’s range, while a dedicated room seeking more than 120 inches moves naturally toward fixed-frame options such as AWOL’s larger sizes.
Which variables matter most
If 120 inches fits both, compare mounting constraints, desired room appearance, screen permanence and serviceability. If the screen must vanish, the fixed-frame choice exits the shortlist. If you never need the wall for anything else, a fixed frame removes the moving mechanisms that retractable screens require.
